I am really pleased to have interviewed this amazing digital marketer Sam Hurley. More than digital marketer, he is an awesome human being, so down to earth and humble.

Sam on the other hand is easily approachable, very friendly & willingly to answer any questions related to digital marketing or growth hacking.

Impressed by his work, I asked him for an interview and within a second he replied back and said ‘Yes’.

Growth Hacky: Can you just brief about yourself?

Sam: I’m a few months into my digital marketing-focused venture: OPTIM-EYEZ. This is the result of 6+ years’ hard work in employment, working for agencies and in-house for companies before making ‘the big leap’ to entrepreneurship.

I love to help others on their journey towards success and my business is based on consultancy with a blend of many digital services including growth hacking and personal branding support.

I firmly believe in humility and I interact with everybody that comes my way. We’re all equal in this world and each have something unique to offer.

The typical social media ‘influencer’ who seem completely inaccessible to many; is that really a sign of a genuine influencer?

Growth Hacky: When did you start your career in Digital Marketing & what influenced you to become the best Digital Marketer?

Sam: I started back when I was 22, working in general PR / marketing with the added responsibility of digital tactics such as affiliate management and link building. Since then, I pushed myself to achieve more. Each time I went for a job interview, it would be for positions demanding far greater accountability than the last. By stepping way out of comfort zones, it’s enabled me to expedite my experience.

I never thought about becoming the best digital marketer and I still don’t now. All the titles in the world are nice but my true happiness is in the freedom this journey brings and the thousands of beautiful people I interact with every week. Working for yourself is the best feeling EVER.

Growth Hacky: Who or what is your biggest motivation in Digital Marketing?

Sam: Engaging with great people and the sheer variety of opportunities that come along each day! That’s my motivation. I feel so privileged to be a part of this exciting industry.

Growth Hacky: What is your daily routine. How do you start your day & end?

Sam: In all honesty – I need to get better at sticking to routine. There’s just so much that goes on in the space of only 20 minutes I find routine very difficult to achieve. I’m only one guy and it’s a constant stream of social engagement, enquiries and client work that takes huge amounts of time and energy…frequently, real-time action is necessary.

For instance – I miss Twitter notifications. I know I do and it really kills me. But that’s only because Twitter sometimes decides it doesn’t want to show me a certain amount after so many hours due to volume received. It’s impossible for me to get on it every 60 minutes without going insane. Here’s why…

This is my typical day (omitting frequent ‘get up and go outside’ breaks):

GET UP, GET WASHED & EAT
08:00 – 14:00 … Social engagement, social content, emails and learning
SHORT BREAK, EAT
14:30 – 18:30 … Work (clients + my own)
GYM
EAT
20:30 – 00:00 … Social engagement, social content, emails and learning
00:00 – 02:30 … Work (my own)
SNACK
WASH
SLEEP

…and that’s pretty much the same for weekends too, aside from a few hours’ quality time with family.

I certainly don’t intend to be ‘working’ this much forever but I appreciate the importance of putting in the hours now for future momentum.

The only notifications I don’t reply to are those I can’t actually see.

Due to the rapid-fire, colossal nature of Twitter; it unfortunately lacks the functionality to show ALL mentions in one place. Many might not realise this flaw – I found out recently after experimentation. It’s a shame but I’ve learnt to just accept that I am going to miss some stuff.

Growth Hacky: What do you think is the biggest challenge for you as a Digital Marketer?

Sam: The above! Time. In addition to actually keeping on top of daily tasks, you also have to be on top of your game. That means investing in 1) personal development and 2) learning the newest happenings in the fast-moving world of digital marketing. No two days are the same and nothing stays as it is. Ever.

Growth Hacky: Suggest a piece of advice for all the Digital Marketing beginners.

Sam: I get asked this question a lot. The only way to truly master something is to get out there and do it. Unfortunately, this does involve long stints in employment. I worked for 6 years across companies and digital agencies which provided me with the invaluable experience to go it alone.

You can read many blogs and attend all the conferences as you want – but without implementation and real-world pitfalls it’s impossible to become an expert. Nothing can prepare you like jumping head first into positions of responsibility. You have no choice but to perform and learn, very quickly.
